Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean
The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has a special focus on the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), whose members include Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Montserrat, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and two associate members –Anguilla and the British Virgin Islands. Barbados is in the Eastern Caribbean region, but is not a member of the OECS.
Among important health challenges in the Caribbean are diabetes, hypertension, interpersonal violence, HIV and AIDS, cancer, and occasional outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue fever.
MEASURE Evaluation partnered with ministries of health and regional health organizations to improve the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of HIV programs, including the integration of HIV information systems into overall health information systems (HIS). MEASURE Evaluation participated in M&E systems assessments led by the Caribbean Health Research Council and provided leadership and organizational development assistance to M&E staff in three ministries of health.
MEASURE Evaluation worked in Barbados and the Easter Caribbean until 2014 and focused on:
- Working with regional partners to improve M&E of HIV programs and health information systems.
- Compiling an inventory of health science literature relevant to the Eastern Caribbean between 2005 and 2012, using six health research databases and 37 public health websites.
- Organizing research planning workshops for Ministry of Health staff.
- Providing assistance to USAID/Barbados for development of performance monitoring plans for planning, managing, and documenting health data.
