Family Planning & Reproductive Health
Family planning (FP) is one of the most cost-effective and beneficial investments in global health. Addressing unmet need, by providing FP to women who do not wish to become pregnant, dramatically reduces the number of unwanted pregnancies and abortions. This, in turn, decreases maternal and child deaths, reduces the spread of HIV, increases women’s empowerment, and curbs climate change—all of which improve the overall health and well-being of women, children, and families.

MEASURE Evaluation advanced the goals of global initiatives such as Family Planning 2020, the Ouagadougou Partnership, and the Sustainable Development Goals by supporting voluntary FP and reproductive health (RH) programs. The project worked to ensure optimal demand, analysis, and use of data to measure program performance and to inform FP/RH interventions and policies in developing countries. This work involved developing new FP/RH tools.
MEASURE Evaluation’s FP/RH work included:
- Developing monitoring and evaluation resources for priority areas in FP, such as gender, FP/HIV integration, costing of FP programs, total market approach, and youth
- Researching issues related to measurement that improve our understanding of important concepts and practices, including measures of men as FP clients, “reproductive empowerment,” and adolescents’ use of FP services
- Maintaining the Family Planning and Reproductive Health Indicators Database to provide a compendium of the most widely used indicators for monitoring and evaluating FP/RH programs
- Supporting small grants for research and data use to build the evidence base in FP/RH, strengthen local research capacity, and maximize opportunities to use research findings for decision making
