Network Analysis

Social network analysis is a thriving field yielding important insights in public health. Most applications of this method have focused on networks of individuals. For example, identifying sexual networks can be used to develop comprehensive strategies to prevent HIV transmission. Another use of network analysis is applying it to connections among organizations.

Many health problems require that the clients’ needs are met by a network of organizations because it is not usually feasible for one organization to provide all the diverse services needed to care for the people with a given health condition. Examples of diverse needs are those of survivors of gender-based violence, the needs of orphans and vulnerable children, and the needs of people who are HIV-positive. A comprehensive understanding of how organizations are (or are not) working together—either by sharing information and resources, or by referring clients for services—helps identify gaps in services and opportunities to get more out of the resources already deployed.

MEASURE Evaluation evaluated networks of organizations in order to improve healthcare coordination and integration—factors which lead to improved access and adherence to care, and ultimately factors that can improve health outcomes.
