Abstract:This two-page brief summarizes the results of an analysis that compared differences in child mortality between surveys conducted in Tanzania in 1999 and 1996. Focusing on the most recent period estimate of each survey, this report concludes that under-five mortality in Tanzania has been at nearly the same level of 140 per 1,000 live births since the mid-1980s. However, HIV/AIDS in recent years is likely to have become a more significant cause of death and may have contributed to a modest increase or neutralization of a decline in child mortality.
