Jim C. Thomas, MPH, PhD, Deputy Director, MEASURE Evaluation

MEASURE Evaluation welcomes Dr. Jim C. Thomas as the new deputy director for HIV/AIDS and infectious disease.

Dr. Thomas has been a faculty member in the epidemiology department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since 1989. His principal research interests are the social epidemiology of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV/AIDS, and public health ethics.  He has worked in many countries, including two years in the Democratic Republic of Congo and one year in Kenya, and is the founder and president of Africa Rising, a nonprofit organization that builds the capacity of indigenous organizations in East Africa.

Recently, Dr. Thomas has been working as a consultant to CDC and WHO on public health ethics in pandemic influenza.  He has published extensively in the public health literature and is author of a textbook on epidemiologic methods for the study of infectious disease.

"Jim already has experience with MEASURE Evaluation in recent months to design a protocol to measure the strength of organizational networks to support service integration," says MEASURE Evaluation director, Sian Curtis. "We are delighted he has decided to extend that involvement to take on this leadership role."
